Noise rock (or noise punk) was popular in Japan and the United Kingdom in the early 1980s. Noise rock uses the traditional instrumentation and iconography of rock music, but incorporates atonality and dissonance, and frequently discards usual songwriting conventions. Examples of noise punk bands include Big Black, Killdozer and Sonic Youth.
