Metalcore

Metalcore combines extreme metal and hardcore punk. The genre grew in 1985 with bands such as Earth Crisis, Deadguy, and Integrity. Generally, metalcore guitarists use heavy guitar riffs and solos, drummers use hardcore d-beats and double bass drums, and vocalists use a vocal style which includes death growls and shouting. Today some metalcore bands also might even sing. A distinguishing characteristic is the "breakdown", whereby the song is slowed to half-time and the guitarists play open strings to achieve the lowest-pitched sound.
